Troy is on the Hudson River about 9 miles north of Albany, New York, and 30 miles southeast of Schenectady, New York. From the south, Troy is about 160 miles from Manhattan Island, New York. The city's coldest month is January, its hottest month is July and its wettest month is also July.
Troy is in Rensselaer County, where it also is the county seat. Troy falls in the Eastern Standard Time zone and is 11 square-miles in area. The city's economy is bolstered by three institutions of higher learning: the women-only Russell Sage College; the Hudson Valley Community college, a junior college affiliated with the State University of New York system; and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a private research university.
In sharp contrast with the quiet allure Troy embodies, the city bills itself as the new, upcoming Silicon Valley. Yet, unlike Silicon Valley in California, Troy will continue to position itself as the middle-to-upper-class alternative where people come to study, exercise the American entrepreneurial spirit, and take solace among architecture that has changed little since the city was born around 1800.
Among the places to stay while visiting Troy, the Hilton Garden Inn near the airport offers an onsite fitness center and indoor pool. The Olde Judge Mansion offers bucolic appeal for those looking for more of a bed and breakfast feel. Other accommodations are plentiful outside the city limits.
